Find Pet-friendly Accommodation in Melbourne

Melbourne has been voted the ‘World’s Most Liveable City’ for its food, sport, colourful and artistic heritage and surrounding environment more times than locals can even remember. And why wouldn’t it be?!

A cultural melting pot, Melbourne is multicultural Australia at its best. Take your pup for a walk through the city streets, and you’ll notice food, fashion and celebrations from all over the world.

Take advantage of Melbourne’s claim as the biggest ‘Greek city’ outside of Athens - 800,000 Melbournians are Greek – and grab a late-night souvlaki from Brunswick Street for you and your four-legged mate.

Looking for something more gourmet for your pet, check out the market. Officially titled Queen Victoria Market, but colloquially known as the "Vic Market," this open-air trading place is full of old-world charm and friendly competition between stallholders and the best fresh produce Victoria has to offer. Apart from doggie treat, you can buy meat, fish, fruit, clothing, coffee and hot doughnuts - actually, if you can’t find what you’re looking for here it probably doesn’t exist. It’s also home to one of the best pet supply shops in the city!

Melbourne boasts the unique claim of being the ‘Sporting Capital of the World’. Even the most ardent sports fanatic could overdose here, with Australian Rules football, rugby union and league, tennis, Formula One, cricket, horse racing, soccer, netball, and basketball all vie for the attention of the public. Victoria is the home of Aussie Rules, with ten of the eighteen Australian Football League clubs based in the state.

While your pup might not get past security at the MCG, you can take him along to a suburban game of footy, cricket or netball without much fuss or merely b inspired by the best to play ‘markers up’ in one of the city’s beautiful parks.

Speaking of park life, the Moonlight Cinema returns to the Royal Botanic Gardens in December and well-behaved pups are welcome. Food trucks will be in abundance, and your dog will love all the sights and smells.

After you’ve spent your day exploring, why not try Melbourne’s other great love, coffee! For the full Melbourne, experience try to find a dog-friendly, hipster café hidden down a street art-laden laneway. Trust us there are more of them then you think!

You can even go a step further and visit Melbourne’s first dedicated dog café, Dog House, on Johnston Street. It has a gated courtyard where dogs can dine on chicken-flavoured pup-corn, turkey muffins and brisket bones as well as wolf down a dogachino made from lactose-free milk, eggs and powdered carob. There are even dog-friendly doughnuts, muffins and lollies. Inside, pooches can enjoy a pampering sesh in the wash, cut and dry area, or try on a vast range of accessories and costumes. They also sell takeaway organic meat. Finally, Dog House doubles as a destination for pet weddings and birthday parties.

If you need some time to yourself, you can pop your pup into daycare. Diggiddy Doggy Daycare has all sorts of dog grooming services as well as doggy daycare deals. So if your dog needs a bath, haircut, or Brazilian (painless, apparently), this is your one-stop destination. The team is certified in animal care and trained in canine CPR - we guarantee your dog will dig it.

Things to do with your dog in Melbourne:

• Play footy in the beautiful parklands surrounding the MCG
• Explore multicultural Melbourne on foot – take the leash
• Eat your way through each suburb
• Pick up pet treats, outfits and anything else your heart desires at the Vic Markets
• Grab a macchiato and pupachino in a laneway cafe
